Description: This is an extremely rare, and perhaps one-of-a-kind image World War One U.S. Navy image. This is a photo brought back from WWI by a US Navy sailor named Joseph Mondzelski of Parson, PA who appears to have served aboard destroyer tender USS Black Hawk and/or USS Lake, largely in Scotland (Kirkwall/Orkney islands). He also took photos of USS Lakeview, a transport ship that operated near Scotland too, and appears to have been familiar with that crew. Type & Size: A 5.5x3 original photograph. Condition: The back side of most photos in this lot have remnants from being glued in a scrapbook. Please see photos for condition. This photo features a group of individuals dressed in colorful and elaborate costumes, likely performing or posing for a theatrical event. Captured in 1918, it includes a caption indicating "THE HAPPY" followed by what appears to be a location marker, "LONDON." The subjects are positioned in a manner that suggests a playful or festive atmosphere. In 1918, the world was experiencing the final year of World War I, with many entertainers and performers using humor as a way to cope with the events surrounding the war. Theatrical performances and variety acts flourished during this period, often providing a much-needed escape for audiences. The employment of vibrant costumes and the tradition of performance art were particularly prominent in cities like London, where cultural activities continued despite the ongoing turmoil.
