Description: Antique WMF ostrich marked Jugendstil Secessionist silver plated hinged sugar or coffee storage tin caddy or possibly a trinket storage box with a rounded lid & nicely decorated in the minimalist clean lines of Art Deco style The WMF ostrich mark stamped on the base dates it from around 1909 based on online research onlineThe number 120 stamped on the base indicates the thickness of silver plating used in production Condition: Hinges in good working order and it is in lovely clean condition for its antiquity -some insignificant surface marks and few tiny very minor dings all consistent with age and use but nothing to detract from attractive display Background on WMF taken from online research: (originally Würtemburgische Machin Fabrik AG), originally founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige, Germany. In 1880 there was an amalgamation of Straub & Sohn and A Ritter & Co. and the factory became famous for domestic and art metalware with an appropriate change of name to Würtemburgische Metallwaren Fabrik AG. A variety of marks have been used during their 150 years of production. The well known 'ostrich' mark originates from the German word for ostrich, 'Der Strauss' after Daniel Straub, one of the founders. The 'G' in the mark stands for the town of Geislingen, on the River Fils and near Ulm in Baden-Württemburg. This beehive mark was introduced in 1909 and changed again around 1925 so dating this box between 1909-1925 or so.
