To utilize the available talent that had not yet been deployed, Walt Disney dedicated the next four years to crafting and creating training, propaganda, and educational films for the Armed Forces. Alongside these films, this remarkable compilation features the full-length film "Victory Through Air Power." Released in theaters in 1943, this compelling propaganda feature has not been reissued until now. You will also have the opportunity to view newly discovered behind-the-scenes footage as well as rare personal narratives about the work atmosphere and culture at the Disney Studio through interviews with Disney Legends Joe Grant, John Hench, and Roy Disney. With special introductions by film expert Leonard Maltin, this collection is a treasured legacy from the past for future generations. World War II made a significant impact on the Disney Studio. Even though approximately one-third of the artists were drafted, production increased fivefold, with up to 95 percent of the output dedicated to military and governmental purposes. Some of the films featured in On the Front Lines have not been viewed since their original screenings, while others were never presented to the general audience. Recognizing the significance of animated training films, Disney produced the studio's inaugural educational film, "Four Methods of Flush Riveting" (1941), employing limited animation to instruct riveters at Lockheed. Many years later, "Four Methods" and the excerpts from military training films continue to be examples of how to effectively convey information with clarity and brevity. Many of the wartime entertainment shorts primarily serve as propaganda. Donald Duck's comic nightmare of laboring on a Nazi assembly line in "Der Fuehrer's Face" remains a hilarious piece of slapstick. In contrast, the darker shorts "Education for Death" and "Chicken Little" have not aged quite as well. One of Disney's most unusual wartime endeavors was Victory Through Air Power (1943), a live-action/animation hybrid inspired by Major Alex de Seversky's contentious book advocating for the utilization of long-range bombers. By the time it reached completion, air power had already become a reality. On the Front Lines also comprises several health-related films developed for the Office of Inter-American Affairs, as well as bond-selling shorts for Canada that incorporate animation from Snow White and Three Little Pigs. This collection of true rarities is essential for anyone with an interest in the evolution of animation, the Disney Studio, or American history during World War II.
