Description: USED Vintage (1867) Illustrated London News (RARE) "Travelling between Vera Cruz and Mexico" Hand-Colored Wood-Engraved Print (20x16), by Mason Jackson Packaging Condition: No original packaging, but includes printseller card, and will be wrapped in plastic cover (will be secure)This hand-colored, antique, wood-engraved print (on rag paper) was printed for the January 5, 1867 issue of "Illustrated London News" (not "Harper's Weekly" February 1867 version), and comes in with 20x16 matte (off-white, acid-free) - hand-coloring date undetermined"Travelling between Vera Cruz (Veracruz) and Mexico (City)" depicts a scene in the neighborhood of Rio Frio (now "Rio Frio de Juárez"); a place infamous for highway robberies and murders. Vera Cruz (principal Atlantic seaport) is about 200 miles distant from Mexico City. The traffic is immense; and the mule-wagons, heavily laden with all sorts of merchandise, are sometimes delayed a month on the road, sticking helplessly in the mud, where the mules frequently perish.Matte Dimensions: 20" (W) x 16" (H)Print Dimensions: 15" (W) x 10" (H)British-Born in Ovingham, Northumberland in 1819, Mason Jackson was the brother and trainee of wood-engraver John Jackson; the principal engraver for the "Art Union of London" (1850-60). Jackson worked as a wood engraver at the "Illustrated London News" (1850-78), and art editor from 1860, and became the first historian of illustrated journalism in England, "The Pictorial Press: Its Origins and Progress" in 1885. He passed away in 1903.This print (#06010970) acquired from Gerhardt H.
