Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Notable Features:This is a first edition hardcover book with the dust jacket. About the Book:The Orient harbors the oldest civilizations of the world, and it was there, in the valleys of the great rivers, that human speech first became poetry and inspiration was perpetuated into written word. The Assyro-Babylonian literature in- stilled its ideas into Greek mythology, and thus succeeded in surviving, although incognito, until European culture began to flourish. To our inestimable advantage, Mesopotamian literature was inscribed on clay tablets which have outlived the destructive action of the ages, and which have been found in the last two centuries by archaeologists under the dust of Iraq's mounds.Voices from the Clay considers Assyro- Babylonian poetry transcribed from these tablets in its cultural setting, illustrating the background upon which the epic and speculative poems were projected. Included is an assessment of the ethnic composition in pre- historic times, a political profile, and an ex- amination of the religious system of the era. Finally, the instrument of literature, the complicated cuneiform script, is analyzed in detail. The sweep of pictorial art, sister discipline in the domain of iconographic testimony, is also presented. The narrative and speculative poems of Assyro-Babylonia have been grouped ac- cording to their mythological surroundings. Each composition is accompanied by a de- tailed background and, whenever possible, by parallels with other eastern Mediterranean documents. The continuance of the Assyro-Babylonian heritage in the drama and mythology of Greece constitutes a bridge linking the oldest Semitic culture with our own age. The poetry examined here testifies to the uninterrupted chain that leads to the Western world of today from the Near East over a lapse of time extending over several millennia.About the Author/Editor:Silvestro Fiore, who received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Cologne, Germany, has recently been appointed associate professor of medieval comparative literature in Brown University, Providence.Condition:The dust jacket is in really good shape.
