Oh, boy, are we beyond that point now. Way beyond. In truth, we’ve been beyond it for years, and yet the conversations so often feel circular, the wins fleeting and, above all, the pace of change desperately unrushed. Accordingly, this month we have brought together five cross-disciplinary sustainability trailblazers, featuring on three covers: actor and campaigner Emma Watson has been a powerful advocate for the environment during the majority of her extraordinary life of fame and influence; model and Vogue’s contributing sustainability editor Amber Valletta stars too, and writes brilliantly of her decades-long experience of graduating from voice in the wilderness to industry thought leader; and finally we have a group of three incredible rising star designers, Priya Ahluwalia, Tolu Coker and Torishéju Dumi, who show how being environmentally minded in your work can be as normalised as it is inspirational. I don’t come to you pretending that we have corralled a perfect blueprint for the future, nor that many of the problems identified by those who feature on our covers don’t also occur on other pages in this same magazine. No ironies have been lost on us. Yet, as Emma thoughtfully observes to Vogue’s Emily Chan, you don’t need to be a “perfect environmentalist” to make a difference. “Perfection is the enemy,” she continues. You have to start somewhere. So here’s what I do believe: our collective mindset is shifting. We have all felt it these past years (the wise among you have been feeling it for far longer than that). And we all have our part to play in improving how we think about fashion, how we choose what we buy, how long we wear it and how much we consume in the first place. “Buy better, buy less” has been a mantra of ours here for several years now. Yet for all of us, readers and editors, I know panic remains. Fashion’s shared responsibility for the environmental future of the planet is correctly, perennially felt. But change is possible, though if there’s anything I’ve learnt these past few years it is that progress happens both fast and slow. Right now, in the creation of a sustainable fashion system, evolution feels desperately, dangerously unhurried. But the mood is shifting and I urge you all to read and feel empowered by the thoughts and styling of the brilliant women leading this edition of Vogue. Revolution in fashion is in the air – I see it especially in the work of Torishéju, Tolu and Priya. Nowhere will fashion’s revolution have more impact than on the future of our planet. So embrace it.
