USS Saratoga (CV-60) was a United States Navy aircraft carrier that served during the Vietnam War. She was the sixth ship in the Forrestal-class of aircraft carriers and was named after the Battle of Saratoga during the American Revolutionary War.Saratoga was commissioned in 1956 and was initially deployed to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. In 1964, she was sent to the Gulf of Tonkin to support US military operations in Vietnam. During her first deployment to Vietnam, Saratoga's aircraft flew more than 7,000 sorties and dropped over 12,000 tons of bombs on North Vietnamese targets.Saratoga made three more deployments to Vietnam between 1965 and 1972, during which time she served as a base for air strikes against enemy targets in North and South Vietnam. In addition to her combat operations, Saratoga also played a key role in Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of American civilians and South Vietnamese refugees from Saigon during the fall of South Vietnam in 1975.After her service in Vietnam, Saratoga continued to serve in the US Navy until her decommissioning in 1994.
