Throughout the Vietnam War it was used for a variety of purposes: hammock, litter, cache container, camouflage cover, sniper's roost, and man-packed cargo net for small loads. The Vietnamese often used these as a fish nets and animal traps. It saw combat service in many US Army advisory and Special Forces operations.
