The Web and The Rock was published posthumously in 1939, a year after Wolfe’s death, and largely assembled from a heap of abandoned manuscripts, fragments, sketches, and other materials by Wolfe’s new editor, Edward Aswell. Aswell’s editorial handiwork stirred up some controversy and questions of authorship, similar to Gordon Lish’s heavy work on Raymond Carver’s stories, but ultimately the final product was largely praised for its emotional power and Wolfian torrents of prose.
