Stilwell moved to Deadwood in 1879 and his curio business was established in 1884 under the name Black Hills Natural History Establishment. He was a well-regarded expert in geology, and his shop sold gems, fossils, Native American artifacts and crafts and other curios that he had collected. His catalogues are scarce.
