Palmer, Cuellar and McNally all won 20+ games backed by a stellar defense.1972 Oakland A’s (93-62) The first of three consecutive titles for Finley’s mustached bunch, and the first for the club since 1930. The Tigers took the A’s the full 5 games in the ALCS and the Series against the Reds went the full seven. In the absence of Reggie Jackson (injured in ALCS), Gene Tenace took the mantle of Mr. October this year, hitting .348 with 4 HR and 9 RBI in the Series.1976 Cincinnati Reds (102-60) The Big Red Machine continued its dominance coming off their 1975 title. Joe Morgan won his second straight MVP award, George Foster took home his first of three straight RBI titles, Griffey hit .336. Bench had an off regular season but hit .444 in the post-season and won the Series MVP as the Reds swept the Phillies and Yankees.1978 New York Yankees (100-63) and Boston Red Sox (99-64). The Yankees first half was nothing but turmoil. The signing of Goose Gossage irritated 1977 Cy Young winner Sparky Lyle and George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson were each other’s throats resulting in Martin’s departure and Jackson’s suspension in July. The Red Sox dropped a once comfortable lead in early September, starting the month 3-13 including the four-game home sweep “Boston Massacre” which saw the Yankees overtake the Sox for first. But the Sox rallied winning their final 11 games to force Game 163 at Fenway Park, forever to be known as the Bucky F. Dent game. Jim Rice (.315, 46 HR, 139 RBI, 406 TB) and Ron Guidry (25-3, 1.74) had years for the ages. While Rice would win the MVP, Guidry and the Yankees would go on to beat the Dodgers for their second straight World Series victory.1980 Philadelphia Phillies (91-71) The Cardiac Kids brought the Phillies their first title. Led by MVP Mike Schmidt (.286/48/121) and Cy Young Winner Steve Carlton (24-9, 2.34) the Phils caught and passed the Expos on the final weekend of the season, went the full five games (four extra-inning) vs the Astros in the NLCS before bouncing the Royals in six games in the Series. 1983 Baltimore Orioles (98-64) Replacing legendary manager Earl Weaver didn’t seem to phase Joe Altobelli. The Orioles pulled from the pack in September winning the division by 6 games, beat the White Sox in four and the Phillies in Series. Cal Ripken (.318/27/102 Gold Glove) won the MVP, Eddie Murray reliably delivered his annual 100+ RBI.1985 Kansas City Royals (91-71) A trio of young starters: Saberhagen (21 y.o.), Danny Jackson (23) and Mark Gubicza (22) and veterans Charlie Leibrandt and Dan Quisenberry propelled the Royals to the post season. George Brett (.335/30/112) and Steve Balboni (36HR) were about the only bright spots in an offense that finished next to last in runs. The Royals won both dramatic seven game post-season series vs the Blue Jays and Cardinals, although a controversial call in the 9th inning of Game 6 by umpire Don Denkinger may have cost the Red Birds a Series victory.1986 Boston Red Sox (95-66) The year “The Curse of the Bambino” was born. The Red Sox epic meltdown in Game 6 has been recounted ad nauseum, but this was a powerhouse team the led the tough AL East for 128 days and rallied to defeat the Angels after falling behind 3 games to 1 and one strike from elimination. Roger Clemens (24-4, 2,48) burst on the scene in his first full season winning the MVP and Cy Young, Boggs (.357/.453/.486) won his 3rd batting title, Jim Rice (.324/20/110) had his last great season.1988 Los Angeles Dodgers (94-67) One of the great underdog stories, the Dodgers improved 21 games from 1987 thanks to new acquisition and spark plug Kirk Gibson (.290/25/76). Hershiser (23-8, 2.26 8 ShO) led a dominant pitching staff and won the MVP in the NLCS and World Series (5 ER in 42.2 IP combined) as the Dodger defeated the heavily favored Mets (100 wins) and A’s (104 Wins). Regular season MVP Kirk Gibson would have only one at-bat in the World Series, but it was a memorable one.1989 Oakland A’s (99-63) A deep and sturdy pitching staff kept the A’s near the top during the first half of the season. The return of Jose Canseco (injury) and Rickey Henderson (trade) in the 2nd half kicked the offense back to life and the LaRussa led A’s won the division going away, knocked off the Blue Jays 4-1 in the ALCS and swept their Bay Brethren Giants in an earthquake marred World Series that took 14 days to complete. 1993 Philadelphia Phillies (97-65) This shaggy crew from Philadelphia led the NL east for all but one day and featured a potent offense led by John Kruk (.316/.430/.475), Lenny Dykstra (.305/.420/143 Runs) and Darren Daulton (24HR/105RBI) and a solid, workhorse rotation. Despite being outscored 33-23 the Phils dispatched the heavily favored Braves (104 wins) before multiple bullpen implosions (a weakness all season) culminated in Joe Carter’s Series winning HR for the Blue Jays in Game 6.1995 Atlanta Braves (90-54) In an amazing 14 year stretch of 1st place finishes, the is the only Braves team to bring home the World Series title. The pitching staff was a half a run per game better than the #2 team. Greg Maddux notched an unbelievable 19-2, 1.63 campaign and his fourth consecutive Cy Young. Glavine (16-7) and Smoltz (12-7) would have been aces on just about any other team. The Braves swept the Reds in the NLCS and took out the 100-44 Cleveland Indians 4-2 in the Series. 2002 Oakland A’s (103-59) The famed “Moneyball” team got off to slow start but reeled off a 15-1 streak June and an unbelievable 20-0 run starting in August and managed to hold off the Angles by 4 games. The team’s good fortune (32-14 in 1 run games) would not extend to the post season where they lost to the Twins 3-2. Tejada (.308/34/131) won the MVP and Zito (23-5, 2.75) the Cy Young.2018 Boston Red Sox (108-54) The 2018 squad won more games than any Red Sox team in history and the most in baseball since 2001. This high powered offense was led by MVP Mookie Betts (.346/.438/.640), JD Martinez (.330/43/130) and Xander Bogaerts (.288/23/103) and aces Chris Sale (12-4, 2.11) and Craig Kimbrell (42 saves, 2.74) keyed one of the top pitching staffs. The Sox knocked off their Nemesis Yankees (3-1) and the Astros (4-1) who had taken them out of the playoffs in 2017. They defeated the Dodgers 4-1, the only loss came in Game 3, the longest game in World Series history at 18 innings and 7+ hours. 2019 Washington Nationals (93-69) Trea Turner (.298, 35SB), Anthony Rendon (.319/34/126), Juan Soto (.282/.401/.548) and a tough rotation featuring Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin brought the World Series back to the nation’s capital for the first time since 1933 and the first title for the Expos/Nats franchise. The Nats dispatched the heavily favored Dodgers (106-56) in dramatic fashion in the NLDS, swept the Cardinals in NLCS and upset the 107 win Astros in a seven game Series. Batter and Pitcher cards are normalized to their league so teams can compete realistically across eras. Balk, Wild Pitch and Passed Ball results are also now based on actual results. 2. Half Results: Many players in SP have less than one chance for HRs, HBP, 3b8. These players now have a “half-a-chance” to produce these results. Also players who are incredibly difficult to K, or pitchers who walk very few batters have a special rating to match their real life results. 3. Platoon Advantage: A simple platoon advantage system that modifies PB: draws adds another level of strategy and accuracy without the added complexity of double column LH/RH splits and encourages intuitive and realistic player use. Players are rated from -3 (extremely poor) to +3 (huge advantage). 4. Park Effects: Going into Coors Field? Very likely your pitcher’s “Stuff” could be Bad, but they may get a boost in Dodger Stadium. 5.
