Southern Bell One Of A Kind Advertising Sample From 1978 Salesman Sample

Description: I own an advertising specialty company - now in our 46th year I am happy to report - and worked in the industry for many years prior to establishing my own firm. For many years my best client was what was formerly known as "The Bell System". Of course after Judge Green's ruling, divestiture occurred and it was later broken up into what was generally called the "Baby Bells" - and later morphed into many variations.So over the years we worked very closely with Western Electric, AT&T, Southern Bell, BellSouth, BellSouth International, Lucent Technologies, OFS, Avaya, etc. I collected many over-run samples, one-or-a-kind spec samples, and the likes. I am now selling much of that collection via eBay. I have been searching through old samples and over-runs of orders I sold to various Bell System entities. And I do have many such samples. Here is a most unusual Bell System One-Of-A-Kind speculative sample that I had produced in 1978, just shortly before my now "First Wife Of 56 Years" and I began our company. And here is what I hope you will find as an interesting background story, as best as I recall it from so long ago...The President of Southern Bell here in Atlanta created a special program for his top management. The V.P. of Public Relations, who, by the way was a good friend with whom I even played tennis, had his graphics people design a special logo for the program. I think the general running theme was for management to perceive a problem, create a solution, and act and accomplish the solution. The idea was essentially to hear, see & act. The graphic folks designed this cleaver adaption of the Bell System Seal, with an ear, eye and fountain pen nib. To really set it off, Latin words were added as shown. The V.P. had me commission one of our suppliers of the day, Hit Sales, then in New York City, to create a one-of-a-kind spec sample using the design. Details:Hit Sales took the art provided by Southern Bell and created a lead striking of a center medallion. As it was the initial lead striking, before dies hardened, the medallion has not been plated - hence the look. The rest of the piece, which incidentally was intended to be an executive coaster - paperweight, or even wall hanging, is finished. that is the diamond cut outer ring, walnut base and brass plate with engraved name. The size is 4" x 6" x 1", and as mentioned, in genuine American walnut wood. There is the name "Robert Craig" engraved on the top plate. I do not recall just who Mr. Craig was, but he was not my contact. The back has an area for hanging if desired, and with a felt base. I still have the supplier "romance card" with additional details about this fine example. The piece is substantial, weighing one pound! It was made in the U.S.A., specifically, NYC. Unfortunately, this creative design was deemed "illegal" under rules for using the Bell System Seal. The S.B. legal department would not sign off on modifying the Bell Seal in this manner. So a different design was created, and no other examples of this one ever struck. This rare spec sample is the only one ever made!!! At the time, there was the suggestion that I destroy it as it mis-represented the Bell System Seal. But I was never instructed directly to destroy it. Instead, I packed it among our many Bell system samples. It has never been used, nor even displayed, and after all of these now 45+ years is in as NEW condition!!! since 1979, it has been stored in a sealed container in one of our climate controlled sample rooms. A very rare find for sure. A great opportunity for anyone who was affiliated with Southern Bell or perhaps collects old telephone memorabilia - or a museum.
