Description: This listing is for a Revolutionary War Horseman Saber with Scabbard c1780. From the original dealer with regard to this specific weapon: "Typical of an officers saber, in a style which borrows heavily from the English, yet is distinctly American in workmanship and certain details. Further, this is the forerunner of numerous distinctively American swords which follow the basic hilt style into the 1800's. See Peterson figure 62 and 65 (referring to The American Sword, 1775-1945 by Harold Peterson) for later U.S. swords developed on this line, from 1800-1812 . Very handsome early sword. Wonderful honey colored bone grip with incised lines. Three branch guard points to cavalry use. Their construction is very good, but clearly not from a professional European smith. This is a colonial product. The very wide, curved blade is plain, with concave sides. Unmarked. Shows smooth wear. Bright steel with some very fine pitting (some frosted areas) . Blade 30¼" long (straight measure, not along curve) . Heavy leather scabbard with 80% surface finish with age cracking . Shows typical New England inscribed line decoration on face. Crude brass drag, typically American in style. Brass throat typically English in style. Possibly recycled." Please look at the photos and judge the condition of the sword for yourself. The photos in the listing are of the item you will be receiving and are part of the description. If you need any additional photos please ask. My father was a lifelong collector of swords and flintlock pistols from the American Revolutionary War through the Civil War. He retained detailed files of where each item was purchased, and only bought from well-known dealers of high integrity. If you would like additional details on a specific item please let me know. At the time of his death, the collection remained with my mother. I am selling the collection on her behalf to provide additional funds for her retirement and in the hopes these phenomenal items may find homes with other collectors. Sincere offers will be considered. Having grown up with many of these weapons on display in our home, I am familiar with the history of them although I am not an expert on appraising edged weapons. Shipping is free in the United States. The package will require signature confirmation on receipt due to the dollar value of the item.
