Description: CELLPHONE USERS PLEASE CLICK ON THE DESCRIPTION LINK TO VIEW DETAILS AND PHOTOGRAPHS! Rare Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber and Scabbard by Mansfield & Lamb (Dated 1864) Click images to enlarge Description For Consideration is a Rare Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber and Scabbard Henry Mansfield and Estus Lamb dated 1864  c1864 This Rare Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber and scabbard dated 1864 was manufactured by partners Henry Mansfield and Estus Lamb in Forestdale, Rhode Island. Issued to Federal horsemen during the last year of the American Civil War, this is one of 37,500 edged weapons produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department by the firm during the war. The guard, grip, and blade are all firmly attached to each other and exhibit no play whatsoever. Its original buff leather washer is present. The brass guard and pommel has a dull yellowed brassy patina. Its blade length measures approximately 34-3/4 inches, with a 27- inch fuller. Its curved blade has a pleasing light grey sheen which has been maintained in excellent condition with little discoloration and no rust. Along the blade but primarily in the lower region are nicks likely from period use. Marked very clearly on the ricasso is “U.S. / J.C.W. / 1864” with “MANSFIELD & LAMB / FORESTDALE R. I.” within a large oval on the reverse ricasso. Due to a scuff mark, the letters “SFI” of “MANSFIELD” are either partially or not visible at all. Its brass two branch guard and knucklebow is in good shape with no unusual bending. Its domed brass pommel cap is present with one side is inspector stamped “C.E.W”, with a stamped “W” on the other side. The center-swell handle grips have the leather wrap cover that is in very good condition with one slightly deformed area near the pommel as can be seen in the additional images. The leather is tightly wrapped by its original twist brass wire. The original matching steel scabbard has acquired a very pleasing mottled grey patina. There is very minor denting on both sides primarily in the lower half. The two ring bands are present and firmly affixed. Both suspend twin rings measuring approximately 1-1/4 inch (outer diameter). Both rings exhibit slight wear indicative of this rig being belted and worn by the soldier. The scabbard retains its throat collar and exhibits a brazed seam along the bottom length where the metal was folded and joined. This finely crafted Mansfield & Lamb saber and scabbard will be an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapon collection. This is a truly excellent example of an original 1845 first pattern naval cutlass, complete with rack number.   Please Note Images! A Beautiful choice example which had previously been on display in a Private Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.
