The building, which has been preserved and (except for this area) is open to the public, contains a small beam engine that was used to wind ropes hauling railway wagons up or lowering them down a 1 in 8 incline on the Cromford & High Peak Railway. The engine can still be worked (by compressed air and electricity) but no ropes are wound these days as the railway on the incline closed in 1963.
