Description: Wonderfully double portrait, circa 1824, of Robert W. Barnard (1799-1868) and wife Jane Curry Barnard (1799-1879) who married in Philadelphia in 1823. They spent their entire adult lives in Philadelphia and Robert W. Barnard’s occupation is listed as a “ printer “, in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 US Census reports for Philadelphia. The couple had a total of 4 children during their marriage: Rebecca Barnard (1824-1885)Robert C. Barnard (1829-1873)Elizabeth Barnard (1832-1908)Susanna Barnard (1836-1911) Robert W. Barnard died in his hometown of Philadelphia on September 25, 1865, and his wife, Jane Curry Barnard died on December 22, 1879 also in Philadelphia. See photos for documentation and genealogy - a packet of genealogy for both Robert W. Barnard and wife Jane Curry Barnard will accompany the sale of this item. The silhouettes are most likely cut to commemorate their marriage in 1824. I believe the silhouettes are the work of The Peale Museum ( although there is no visible mark ). Perhaps there is a mark on the opposite side verso of each. The style is definitely that of PEALE works, and the couple did reside in Philadelphia - so the likelihood is strong that Peale Museum cut the works. The silhouettes are hollow cut with a black silk material backing, and housed in a wonderfully detailed eglomise mat with hand painted gilt oval cartouches with an intricate filigree like motif detailing. Also, there are flower motifs hand painted in the center top and bottom, and in each of the four corners of the frame. The frame is Mahogany and with a nice beveled / cant that helps draw the eye towards the silhouettes - which are further enhanced with a gilt fillet ( liner ). A professional framer custom cut an acid-free mat for the backboard, and also cut out two windows in the mat to reveal the names written in old beautiful script “ Robert W. Barnard “ and “ Jane Barnard - wife “. The beautiful Mahogany frame has a nice mellow patina, the glass is extremely early with bubbles and imperfections ( just the way we love it ), and measures approximately 15 inches x 12 1/2 inches. This is a large frame and makes for an excellent and impactful presentation of the silhouettes! Displays wonderfully with a strong presence. Items of this fragile nature are most carefully wrapped and packaged, double boxed, and fully insured, thus, the listed postage. 8618 RP
