Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) PEEBLES. This old town is beautifully situated, mostly upon a peninsula between the Tweed and Eddleston Water. It was a frequent residence of the Scottish Kings, and its fair of Beltane was celebrated by James I. in "Peblis to the Play." There are some remains of churches and old buildings, and a little of the wall is preserved on the east side. There is some woollen manufacture, and of late the town has become a summer resort for anglers, and its residential part has increased. William and Robert Chambers were born here, and erected the Chambers Institute. Mungo Park also practised here between his first and the second (fatal) expedition to the Niger. Over the Tweed is a fine old bridge of five arches, seen in the view, which is taken from Neidpath Castle.
