Description: Paul Lawrence Dunbar / MAJORS AND MINORS 1st Edition 1895 RARE. (Missing frontispiece) 1st Edition (only 500 printed).First printingof the author'sscarcesecond book. Dunbar became the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance. The New York Times called him "a true singer of the people white or black." Frederick Douglass once referred to Dunbar as, "one of the sweetest songsters his race has produced and a man of whom [he hoped] great things." Dunbar was one of the first African-American writers to establish an international reputation. In addition to his poems, short stories, and novels, he also wrote the lyrics for the musical comedy In Dahomey (1903), the first all-African-American musical produced on Broadway in New York. Brown cloth, stamped in gilt, with brown floral-design endpapers. Light soiling/sptting to covers. Hinges tight and binding is fully intact and strong. Aside from the penciled inscription and date on the endpaper and penciled numbers on the inserted tissue paper there are no other markings. The pages are all clean and crisp without any dog ears or tears. However, the book is very unfortunately missing the frontispiece with his image. The bottom corners of the cover are very lightly bumped, the edges have very little rubbing to them, the inner boards are not exposed anywhere on the cover. Really great shape overall. One of only 500 copies published. Considered as America's first major African-American poet, this is Dunbar's second book. Poorly produced, and printed cheaply, the publisher's mis-spelled the author's middle name as "Lawrence" on both the cover and the title page.
