Description: This is an original August 1978 issue of Playboy Magazine (subscription edition), and it's part of a trove of magazines we retrieved from a longtime collector. He kept his collection in the basement, and the condition of individual issues ranges from Superb (the CGC equivalent of a 9 or 10) to "space filler" (a CGC 1 or 2). We are listing the issues individually, so we are able to make issue-specific notes regarding condition and content below. Please note that combined product amounts over $35 on a single order from our store get a shipping rebate. The cover of the August 1978 issue is graced by (the legs of) Playmate Nicki Thomas (March 1977) in her only appearance on cover. Pictorials this issue include one on the photography at the heart of Faye Dunaway's new movie, "The Eyes of Laura Mars", and there's also a pictorial on real-life secretaries (before they were administrative assistants) who have a penchant for modeling before the camera. One of them, Nina Blackwood, went on to become something of a minor celebrity in her own right as part of the original VJ lineup at MTV and a general 1980s icon; she continues to broadcast on Sirius XM radio. The sole fiction contribution is a combined effort from Herbert Burkholz and disgraced (and convicted) author Clifford Irving. Other content includes the usual cartoons and humor, as well as an interesting look at the pop group The Bee Gees, who were still riding high off their soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" and the disco craze in general. The centerfold is Vicki Witt, and the interview is with Ted Turner, the outspoken media mogul who also owned the Atlanta Braves and was the skipper of the yacht that had recently won the Americas Cup. The condition of this issue is, in our opinion, an outright 9 teasing a 10. No, seriously. The front cover has so little apparent handling at first glance (and second glance) that we hardly want to touch it. The back cover does have some small flattened creases near the bottom (classic signs it was in a magazine rack for a time). Also, because covers from this period were printed and cut in a separate operation during the production process, they are nearly all 1/16" shorter vertically than the contents and sometimes not perfectly aligned which, in this case, has led to a small overlap at the extreme right edge bottom of the front cover. Aside from those items though, there's not much to complain about — all pages are present (including the centerfold), the binding staples are secure with no tearing around them, and there are no creases, folds, or dog-ears of note. This issue still even has its original reader-reply/subscription cards so, again, this issue is about as pristine as they get. We feel this specimen would be an outstanding addition to any collection, and it would be extremely difficult to find another in significantly better condition. All our issues are shipped in protective polybag sleeves.
