Description: Untitled Document Gallery Store Mythical Iguana Señor Tomas Quintana - Sculptor Height - 11 inches - at Tail Tip Length - 10.75 inches Width - 2.75 inches - at the shoulders Weight - 2 pounds 3 ounces This pottery has been created by Señor Tomas Quintana. Tomas is regarded in the highest levels for his realistic and symbolic representations of the wildlife of Chihuahua. This is a Iguana with its typical arched back posture. The symbolic aspect arises from the use of traditional designs first implemented by his ancestors 1000 years ago. The form and image of a viper has been implemented on both side of the tail, essentially creating two animals in one. The serpents body is created from repeating geometric triangles. Parallel repeating 'arrows' are fanned across the center of the body while the face is complete with a tribal-like mask. All designs are an homage from a descendant to his great grandparents many centuries removed. The piece is full and heavy and unique to the artist colony of Mata Ortiz. There are intentional holes in the nostrils and the end of the tail that assist in the successful firing of the clay. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Mata Ortiz is legendary, both the village and the pottery taking it's name, and I am proud to be the largest and most trusted seller of these works on eBay! In the 70's a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would come across. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area in which the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hers and his own sense of beauty. The designs are bold, earthy and individualistic. Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. These creations are truly unique transformations that only this small little region of the world can create from it's own soil. I have been tangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years. Now I am spiritually bound by their overwhelming beauty and intense and intricate designs. When I look at one of the pieces, I feel I am meeting in person the artist who created this, and am visiting his home. bout Desert Buckeye Gallery DESERT BUCKEYE GALLERY is my specialty store featuring high end items from fine jewelry to display pottery, center piece minerals, and other highly collectible earthy related masterpieces.
