Description: Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens. First edition 1844 Chapman & Hall London. Illustrated by H K Browne, better known as 'Phiz'. The vignette to the title page has 'Phiz fecit', the signpost has 100£ on the notice. There are 7 studs on the edge of the bow top of the trunk. On page XV are listed the 10 lines of errata, printed over 14 lines. Half leather binding, with marbled paper to upper and lower boards. decorative tooling to edges of leather corners and front of spine, as well as 6 bands (not raised) of tooling to spine, with title in second compartment. All external extremities are rubbed, with some small areas of loss to the leather (all visible in the scans) but the boards are still firmly attached. Edges of text block are marbled. The plate at page 178 is partially detached, but still attached by approximately an inch and a half at the base. Some foxing to text pages, but most plates are heavily foxed, although not all. This is a common fault with the paper used in these. Some of the plates have small close tears, 2 or 3 of which have small The most interesting fault with this volume is something I haven't come across before: pages 193 to 208, inclusive, are missing. However, they appear to have been omitted at the time of binding, because there is no apparent gap, and the marbling on the text block edge does not have any visible break in the pattern at that point. Strangely, the plate 'Mr Jefferson Brick proposes an appropriate sentiment' which should be at page 199 is present, even though page 199 itself isn't. I personally find this quirk rather interesting.
