The story might seem familiar, biker gangs brought down by an ex-cop with nothing left to lose, but that is because it’s been copied, homaged and lampooned ever since, but there is something visceral about the original; the raw, uncompromising way in which everything is done for real, genuine destruction and brutal depictions give the film its power. The dystopian future was never explicit and was something forced upon the film, it just happened to be filmed in desolate places in Australia, giving that look, but the franchise took that idea and ran with it creating a world that, once again, became a staple for the genre. Max himself became an icon, launching its star into international fame (Mel Gibson looks impossibly young here!), while director/writer George Miller, quickly realising what he had created, wanted to come back for more. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1982) That rarest of breeds, a sequel that equals or betters the original. Taking the dystopian future to heart, now set in desolation, the sequel is little more than one big action scene, that gets bigger and bolder with every passing frame. It is pure carnage in the form of entertainment, amping up the villainy, the mayhem, the stunts, the very stakes, and it is utterly fantastic. Keeping the characters real, their actions natural but being set in a larger-than-life world, Max regains some of his humanity it the form of protector, giving excuse to the mayhem and purpose to the narrative. Not quite changing the genre for good, but certainly setting it alight, the film was such a success that Hollywood came knocking and suddenly there was more money for Max to continue his journey. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) Returning for the third installment, Mel Gibson portrays Max who becomes the unlikely savior of a tribe of lost children in a world ruled by Aunty Entity (Tina Turner), where essentials like water, food, and gasoline are prized commodities. The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang-esque kids attack on Bartertown is head-scratchingly crazy, Master putting on more and more clothes the further from the camp, “Stop, this is a stick-up”the film does build on the world, groups of desperates living in thrall due to their situation, warring tribes, underworlds, much of which would be build upon in the fourth film, and I have to admit, Tina Turner is a delight in her maniacal role, but the whole thing is bonkers, and only becomes a Mad Max film at the end. Probably best forgotten about. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Haunted by his past, Max (Tom Hardy) joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), leading a group escaping from the tyrannical Immortan Joe across the treacherous Wasteland in a high-speed, high-stakes battle for survival. Ahhhh, what a return to form. Essentially a remake of the climax of the second film, Fury Road, is one of the finest action films ever made. At a time when CGI is all too prolific, Miller went back to what made his films stand out, everything is done for real, and it shows. There are good characters, their actions believable, their plight empathetic, the stakes are high and the narrative tight – it is a giant action extravaganza, reigniting the passion for a franchise long thought dead – Max was back, sure he was relegated to second fiddle in his own film, but it didn’t matter, Fury Road is a titan, on level footing with the first two films in its brutality and visceral carnage. One wonders if we’ll ever see it’s like again. Digital Copies Digital Copies: Inside the case are two inserts, one contains a code to redeem a 4K digital copy of Mad Max on Vudu, the other insert contains a code to redeem 4K digital copies of the three remaining movies on Movies Anywhere. The Movies Anywhere code is not redeeming all films in 4K at all retailers, though, with iTunes/Apple TV providing Road Warrior and Fury Road in 4K (only the latter has a Dolby Atmos track) and Beyond Thunderdome in HD.
