Description: L'AVVENTURA starring GABRIELE FERZETTI, MONICA VITTI The Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films BLACK & WHITE Running time approximately 143 minutes LANGUAGE: Italian SUBTITLES: English A girl mysteriously disappears on a yachting trip. While her lover and her best friend search for her across Italy, they begin an affair. Antonioni's penetrating study of the idle upper class offers stinging observations on spiritual isolation and the many meanings of love. Criterion is proud to present this milestone of film grammar in a new Special Edition double-disc set. What appears to be a search for a missing person is actually an examination of alienation and self-discovery found along a voyage through the morally decadent world of the idle rich. A group of rich Italians head out on a yachting trip to a deserted volcanic island in the Mediterranean. Two of the group, Anna and Sandro, young lovers considering marriage, have a dispute. When they are about to leave the island, Sandro announces that Anna is missing. A thorough search of the island is made on Anna's behalf, but she is never found. While they are searching, Claudia and Sandro develop an attraction for each other. Sandro and Claudia proceed to become lovers and all but forget about the missing Anna. Claudia and Sandro galavant through the Italian countryside, supposedly investigating Anna's disappearance, but their true motives are never clear, even in the last -- entirely enigmatic -- scene of the movie.
