Jersey Blues Tab - 50th Armored Division Patch

Description: This sale is for a Jersey Blues tab. It was worn below the 50th Armored Division patch or shoulder sleeve insignia. The tab measures approximately 3 3/4" long by 3/4" in heigth. It is fully embroidered with a merrowed edge. The border is dark green and Jersey Blues is embroidered in blue on a yellow background. The 50th Armored Division was formed in 1946. It replaced the 44th Infantry Division within the New Jersey National Guard. New Jersey had supported part of the 44th Division prior to WWII, so it now supported the 50th Armored Division. This is where the 50th Armored Division picked up the nickname of Jersey Blues. The Jersey Blues nickname dates back to the mid-eighteenth century. It came from the uniform worn by New Jersey troops during that time period. The uniform consisted of a blue coat with red lapels and cuffs, a red waistcoat and blue breeches. The nickname stuck until 1968 when the 50th Armored Division was reorganized. It was joined by the 27th Armored Brigade from New York. At that point, the Jersey Blues nickname was dropped. The Jersey Blues nickname was re-introduced in 2008 when the New Jersey National Guard was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom as the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
