Epoque XIX, 1832Pair Jean BARON (1788-1869) MonogrammedTotal dimensions 12.4 x 18.4cmGood condition, glued to paper.THIS IS AN ANTIQUE DRAWING NEARLY 170 YEARS OLD. Balthazar Jean Baron (1788-1869) was a French draftsman, aquafortist engraver, and lithographer. Originally from Lyon, Balthazar (sometimes written Balthazard) Jean Baron seems to have learned the art of lithography on his own around 1823-1824, before turning to etching. During a trip to Paris, he met Eugène Bléry who recommended that he study the technique of the Lyon engraver Jean-Jacques de Boissieu. He draws "from nature". While running a silk factory and being a magistrate attached to the Lyon Commercial Court (1843-1845), he began producing a number of engravings from his own drawings, mainly country landscapes or views inspired by his region, but there were also views of Versailles, Senlis, and Francheville. He is one of three illustrators in the collection coordinated by Charles Nodier and Louis Lurine, Les environs de Paris, paysage, histoire, monuments, mœurs, chroniques et traditions published by Boizard and G. Kugelmann (Paris, 1844).1 Engraving painter Flavien Emmanuel Chabanne (Lons-le-Saulnier, 1799-1858) executes a portrait of him (1831).2 His prints were published late, among others by Alfred Cadart and Jean Luquet (1863-1866).3 He had a son, Stéphane Baron (1827-1882), a pupil of his father and then of Léon Cogniet (1853) who exhibited at the Salon de Paris until 18824. Artwork The Indecisive Man, Landscape at Saint Bel, 1836 Etching (BNF).He signs most of his J works. B. and more rarely Baron, J. Baron or BJ Baron. Its production amounts to nearly 200 pieces, spanning between 1816 and 1869. Baron was rediscovered in the late 1990s by Colette and Étienne Bidon who made a major donation to the city of Lyon and organized several exhibitions5. Baron may have signed the lithographed composition for Azélie's libretto: new zipline, lyrics and music by Léon Bruys6.
