Description: Z. Astruc, Editor of 'L'Artiste'c1859 Drypoint Printed on cream laid paper with watermark and full margins. Glasgow's cataloue raisonné lists three states of this drypoint, before it was cancelled. There is one impression of the first state; one of the second; and three of the third state. It was then included in the Cancelled Set published by the Fine Art Society in an edition of about 20 in 1879. This print belongs to this last grouping, with diagonal lines across face and the drypoint fainter. Most of these impressions are in public collections (the British Museum, Hunterian Art Gallery, Freer Gallery, National Gallery, etc) so I have been unable to locate another impression for sale at auction or otherwise. Portrait of Zacharie Astruc (1833-1907), editor of the L'Artiste. This is one of a series of portraits of Parisians in different professions that Whistler produced among his first etchings, all of whom were friends, including J. Becquet, Sculptor, C. L. Drouet, Sculptor, and Finette. When it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1860, when Whistler was still relatively unknown, it was described as "a fine and characteristic portrait." The few existing impressions were exhibited several times in Whistler's life and were also included in the large Memorial Exhibitions after his death. Plate: 9 x 6 inches
