Floherty, author of the famous book Inside The FBI (1943), died last night in Nassau Hospital, Mineola. He was 87 years old and lived at 9 Shoreyiew Road. Mr. Floherty, who was also an artist, a photographer, a former art and editorial director and a former public relations man, has been called “a star reporter for American youth.” His writing led him to travel the equivalent of twice around the world, and he interviewed men in many jobs, from cabinet officer to cab driver, from patrolman to test pilot. He went to sea aboard the Coast Guard cutter Pontchartrain to observe the great hurricane of 1938. To get his stories firsthand, he lived in lighthouses, on lightships, with oil drillers, G‐men and Secret Service agents. He was a friend of J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His work with the Coast and Geodetic Survey led to a book, “High, Wide and Deep,” for which he received a citation from former Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer. Mr. Floherty was born of American parents in Ireland, attended St. Flanaans College there, took a fling at the sea, then came to the United States at the age of 20. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, he became a reporter and an artist for The Lowell (Mass.) Sun. Returning to New York, he entered the trade publication field and then joined the United Publishers Corporation as an art and editorial director. As a young man he rowed in an eight‐oar shell on the Harlem River and he joined’ the New York National Guard's Seventh Regiment before World War I. He, was barred from war service because he had lost an eye in an athletic accident at the age of 14. After the war he headed his own public‐relations concern and photographic illustration service. It was during this period that he found that his teenage children, a son and a daughter, and their friends showed keen interest in the stories he often told them of experiences at sea, in boat racing, flying and in maneuvers with the Seventh Regiment. This gave him the Idea of writing books for teen‐agers. As a member of a volunteer fire company, he noted the fascination that fire and fire‐fighting has for young people. “Fire Fighters” was his first book in the juvenile field. Its success prompted him to report other activities in which there was a colorful story. Most of his books were published by Lippincott. In World War II, Mr. Floherty was chairman of Port Washington's mobilization and defense demonstration committee. A vital, rugged man, who looked years younger than his age, Mr. Floherty was a polished raconteur, an ardent sailor and an expert trapshooter. The walls of his Dutch Colonial home on a hill overlooking Manhasset Bay are adorned with many marine pictures he painted in oil and water‐color. He was a founder of the Manhasset Bay Sportsmen's Club and North Hempstead Country Club, a member of the Dutch Treat Club and a former member of the Salmagundi Club and the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. His latest books were “Youth and the F.B.I.,” published in 1960; “Whirling Wings” (1961), and “Skin Diving Adventures” (1962). Mr. Floherty leaves his second wife, the former Margaret Pharr; a son, John J. Floherty Jr. of Northport, L. L.; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Gaeta of Port Washington, four grandchildren and five great‐grandchildren. Mr. Floherty's first wife, the former Bessie Hunt, died in 1955.
