Description: Juglans Nigra AKA Black Walnut seedlings from Hershey tree farm in Downingtown, PA. Bare root, 18" to 24" tall. These seedlings were grown in air-pruning beds and they have straight tap roots. John Hershey was a nut tree nurseryman. In the 1920s he collected the finest specimens of nut and fruit trees on his farm in Downingtown, PA. Today the farm has been redeveloped into suburban housing, but some of the trees remain and produce seeds to this day. Hershey's black walnut trees produce exceptionally large nuts. All our seedlings are grown from seed, meaning every plant is a genetically unique individual. We collect stock that represents the wide genetic diversity and adaptive potential of local ecotype plants. We supply resilient, diverse, and adaptable food-producing native plants suitable for ecological restoration and food forests.
