First Day Cover for 1979 - International Year of the Child, 15-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 15, 1979, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Ketcham has drawn the head of his most famous character, Dennis the Menace, above his signature. HANK KETCHAM, (1920-2001) a former cartoonist for Lantz Productions at Universal Studios, debuted his strip, "Dennis the Menace", in 1951. Based on his own son, Dennis, the successful strip was distributed in over 1,000 newspapers in 48 countries, appearing in 19 languages, by the time of Ketcham's death in June 2001. In 1951, cartoonist MORT WALKER (1923-2018) introduced Beetle Bailey, who first came to life as a college cut-up before accidentally stumbling onto an Army recruiting post. "Beetle Bailey", which first appeared in 50 newspapers is now seen in 1,800 newspapers, making it the third most widely distributed comic strip. Walker is also the co-creator, with Dik Browne of "Hi and Lois" (1954), a spin-off of "Beetle Bailey" (Lois is Beetle's sister). Fine condition.
