The initial product offering was produced in the years from 1964 to 1969 and represented four of the branches of the US Armed Forces, the Action Soldier (Army), Action Sailor (Navy), Action Pilot (Air Force), and Action Marine (Marine Corp). It may best be remembered for its original tagline, "America's Movable Fighting Man. The name is derived from the usage of "GI Joe" for the generic U.S. soldier. The development of the GI Joe toy line led to the coining of the term "action figure" (not a doll!). GI Joe's appeal to boys has made it an American classic among toys, having been named Toy of the Century by The Children's Museum of Indianapolis in 2012, when over 24,000 folks, young and old, voted for their favorite toy of the last century. By 1968-69, however, sales had dropped drastically as America was embroiled in the Vietnam War. Hasbro had to reconsider the toy lines focus. In the 1980s, the toy line underwent a significant change with the introduction of the 3 3/4-inch scale action figures, which were heavily influenced by the highly popular Star Wars figures of the same scale. The 3 3/4-inch line featured a diverse range of characters from the GI Joe team, a group of military heroes, and their adversaries, the Cobra organization. "Valor vs. Venom" refers to the story line (and toy line) first released in 2004 by Hasbro, which was a continuation of the GI Joe franchise. In this story line, the GI Joe team faced off against the Cobra organization, which had developed a substance called "Venom" that enhanced their soldiers' abilities. The GI Joe team, in turn, utilized a counter-substance called "Valo," which allowed them to combat Cobra's Venom-enhanced forces. The "Valor vs. Venom" toy line featured action figures, vehicles, and play sets based on the characters and events from the story line. The line included both new figures and re-releases of classic characters, all in the 3 3/4-inch scale (as well as in the original 12" format). The toys typically had articulation points, weapons, and accessories that allowed for imaginative play and display. Auction is for a wonderful offering, the GI Joe Real American Hero - Valor Vs Venom 3-3/4" two pack. This set is comprised of two figures, Bombstrike and Croc Master. It was originally sold as part of a "Buy One, Get One Free" Hasbro promotion in 2005. The figures are brand new, factory sealed and never removed from card. The original packaging contained two of these two packs. This auction is for one two pack. Card is in very nice condition and is very attractive. Two file cards are included - one on back of card, and one inside the sealed card. There is little to no shelf wear, with some warping and a Hasbro-applied "Not For Resale" sticker on bottom of card.
