Germany Last Days January 1945 War Is Ending Hitler Putsch On 3 Pieces--NOTE: These are NOT complete covers but stamps on piece--the pieces happen to be from lettersheets so portions of the letter have survived.. On the back are scraps of the messages possibly from Gerta Walther to her husband, brother or son in Berlin. One of the pieces reads among other text something like: "...and each day the war comes and the end is closer. That's why we do not want to lose heart. Everything passes. Now we just hope that you arrived well and that with you everything went fine...." If I have translated this correctly, such sentiments were VERY dangerous to express especially in writing. Perhaps that is why the writer (wife or sister or mother) placed the Hilter Putsch stamps on these pieces of lettersheets--to help them pass through the postal system as representative of loyal, "good" Germans. Two are dated January 27, 1945 and one is dated January 29, 1945. A few days after the last dated one, Berlin was declared a fortress city by Hitler. The Soviets were only about 50 miles away. Did Herr Walther survive? It should be noted that the pieces are canceled in Munstereifel, a town located far to the south of Berlin in Germany, well away from the horrors of capital--about 400 miles.Image has been enlarged for ease of inspection. This unfortunate action by the USPS has significantly increased the postage charges for foreign locations.
