Description: The Lark, the quixotic and humorous end-of-century magazine complete series, issues 1 to 24, published by William Doxey, San Francisco, May 1895 - April 1897. Two first edition books in NF condition (Book 1, Numbers 1-12; Book 2, Numbers 13-24), 14 x 20.5 cm, publisher's cloth, many pages uncut. Number 1 contains Gelett Burgess's famous absurd poem “The Purple Cow”. Bound in publisher's beige cloth, illustrated boards. Each of the two volumes is signed by Burgess, in 1912, on the front pasted-down end papers of each volume. The two volumes are encased in a handsome and well-fashioned archival box with full information on the leather spine, as shown. The Lark magazine contributed to the literary renaissance of the 1890s in San Francisco. Founded by Burgess and Bruce Porter, the journal quickly attracted many literary contributors including Porter Garnett, Carolyn Wells, Willis Polk, and Yone Noguchi. Local artists (Ernest Peixotto, Florence Lundborg and Maynard Dixon) contributed to the illustrations and book covers.
