Description: Original Federal & Confederate Ammunition found on the Fredericksburg area battlefields. They were used by the infantry and would have had paper cartridges. The Federal issue for the .58 Springfield rifle or other contract arms of that caliber and the .58 Federal issue Williams Cleaner were issued together in cartridge tins of twenty each. The Williams was used to clean the black powder fouling from barrel. The Confederate issue.57 Enfield round were made in Southern arsenals or imported from England through the Northern blockade. The .54 “Mississippi” issued for the Mississippi rifle or the imported Austrian Lorenz rifle was used by both sides. The .58 “Gardner” for Confederate rifle were only made at the Richmond Arsenal in Virginia. The .69 Musket Ball for the Model 1842 musket would also have been used by both sides. In December of 1862 the Federal army crossed the Rappahannock River leading to the Battle of Fredericksburg. On May 5th, 1864 General Grant’s “Army of the Potomac” met General Lee’s “Army of Northern Virginia” in an area that was called the “Wilderness”. After days of fighting there Grant moved south to Spotsylvania where Lee had gotten ahead of his army. The fighting there started on May 8 and lasted until the 21st of 1864. The artifacts come as shown in a 6” x 8” riker style case as shown. You can pull the pins out of the sides of the case and remove the bullets to look at them, they will fit right back in. We ship them with a cushioning under the glass, just remove the pins. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated.
