Description: Exceptional Swiss c.1820 Gold Musical Fob featuring Fruits, Flowers & Urn Exceptional piece from the early 19th century c. 1820, musical fob. This fob is ornately decorated with chased floral designs and harvest fruits found over following in the cornucopia / crescent. Splendid sunflowers, roses, daisies, tulips, daffodils, Chrysanthemums and carnations, provide the base for a basket in the form of a crescent that displays pears, apples and grapes, woven together with ivy. A neo-classical urn completes this intricately detailed fob. The design is reminiscent of 17th-century still-life paintings of flowers, particularly the work of Gaspar Pieter Verbrugghen the Younger (1664-1730). His still life *Tulips, roses, carnations, lilies, chrysanthemums and other flowers in an urn on a stone ledge, a bough of oranges, pears, grapes, cherries, nectarines and plums" serves as a direct inspiration. The fob has been restored and cleaned however it no longer plays a tune. It does wind however and emit sound. At the beginning of the 19th century, due to advances seen during the industrial revolution, this fob would have been the ultimate accessory for someone very wealthy. Other fobs like this figure in prominent private collections as well as museums. The fob is in overall excellent shape. While the 8 note petit barillet movement music box no longer plays a tune, it still winds up and emits sound. A beautiful work of gold craftsmanship and great conversation piece.
