Description: Vintage hardcover edition of Moriae Enconium, or the Praise of Folly, by Desiderius Erasmus (Heritage Press, 1955). Originally published in 1511, Erasmus's classic satirical work about the foibles of human life is widely considered one of the foundational literary works of the Renaissance. Because the work included Erasmus's attacks on the corruption of the Catholic Church, it also contributed to the Protestant Reformation, which began just a few years after the book was published. Erasmus himself was a committed Catholic, however, and decried the attempts of Protestants to use his work as justification for their actions. This book is bound in a very attractive slipcase and contains beautiful woodcut illustrations throughout by Franz Masereel. The book is in excellent condition, with no marks, tears, or other signs of wear.
