Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright, who lived from 1937--2022, was an American diplomat and political scientist who served in President BILL CLINTON's administration as the 64th U.S. Secretary of State from 1997-2001, the first woman to hold that post. Born in Prague, CZECHOSLOVAKA, she immigrated to the U.S. after the 1948 communist coup d'etat when she was eleven years old. She graduated from Wellesley College and earned a PhD from Columbia University before serving as a staff member on the National Security Council under Zbigniew Brzezinski. In 1981 she joined the faculty at GEORGETOWN and advised Democratic candidates. "Madame Secretary: A Memoir" is a candid account of her dramatic life and an insider's portrait of twenty-five years of national and international politics. In 1959, Madeleine Korbel married Joe Albright, a reporter for Newsday; they divorced in 1982. She reveals her personal experiences of being a refugee and emigrant, and raising three daughters on her own while rising in the man's world of politics and diplomacy. She also presents her analysis of the global challenges facing America. Albright says that some of her heroes were ELEANOR ROOSEVELT and MAHATMA GHANDI whom she never met. She also cited her father, EDMUND MUSKIE and AUNG SAN SUU KYI, leader of Burma. She was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1993-1997 and held that position until she joined the Clinton Administration. In the Acknowledgments page, Albright thanked BILL WOODWARD, a gifted speechwriter, who was her collaborator in writing her memoir. She also thanked President Clinton for giving her the opportunity to represent the U.S. to the world. When asked how she wanted to be remembered, Albright said that she hoped people would say that she did the best with what she was given and that she tried to make her parents proud, serve her country and stand on the side of freedom. Albright was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2012. 562 pages. I offer combined shipping.
