Description: Empty gallon can, MD261 A stock can, granted—yes. But—a very rare number on a stock can, indeed. MD261 is a number with scant references online, and in my own searches, there appear to be absolutely no archived online sales for any type of can with that number from the past 10-20 years. The “Annual Report of the State Board of Health of Maryland for the Year Ending December 31, 1925” (1927, page 123) lists Coulbourne & Jewett (Seafood Packing Co) of St. Michaels, Talbot County, MD with number MD.261. Besides this can, other relics of the company (shipping tags, etc.) seem to be quite far and few between as well. The company’s plant site in St. Michaels is now the site of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. This company was a well-known African-American - owned business circa 1902-1962. William Coulbourn and Frederick S. Jewett were the owners. The latter was a pioneer in the crabmeat industry and had ties to Crisfield and Princess Anne in Somerset County, MD, with both his father and an uncle apparently serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. Note the emblem on the can for the Oyster Institute of North America, with copyright dated to 1935, and an indication that the company which packed the can (referenced with MD261) was a “MEMBER” of the Institute.
