Description: Massachusetts Bay Colony did not practice freedom of religion from the start. The law required attendance at the official Puritan church. People were also expected to report to church every Sunday in a mannerly and obedient manner. Other religious practices were not tolerated and people with differing religious views were often banished from the colony. Failure to attend service would result in a fine, sometimes 50 pounds of tobacco (a sort of currency). Getting away with crime back then was difficult was more difficult, for the communities were set up in small clusters of people. Offering a superb example of Massachusetts Bay Colony’s rigid religious practices in Colonial America. 3 7/8 x 7 ¾ Manuscript Summons of Court of General Sessions, Dighton, Massachusetts, September 1, 1719, recto and verso.
