Each lies compactly round its interesting little church in the valley bottom near the river. That at Coin St. Dennis is full of riddles for the antiquary, but that at Coin Rogers has a nave that is plainly Saxon at all four corners with the tell-tale 'long-and-short work' in the quoins, and the unmistakable design of the sundial on the south side which has taken note of changing times for at least a thousand years. The picture shows one of the roads leading down from the Roman Fosse Way into the village. By another entrance I noted a barn which I reckoned must stand nearly forty feet, from the roadside to the top of its gable. Taking a peep inside I read on a stone 'W. Midweinter 1794' with a primitive representation of corn-in the-ear. I don't know whether this man was the founder of the barn or not but the name was locally historic, the Midwinters being one of the richest and most powerful families in the days of the Cotswold wool-staplers.
