Description: A mid-century Historical Treasure!A full collection of the eight issues of Collier's Magazine which have been widely credited for the launching of the Space Age, each of them complete and in very-good to near-fine condition*, bagged and boarded. These include articles by such pioneering luminaries of assorted astronautical endeavors as Wernher von Braun, Willy Ley, Heinz Haber, Fred Whipple, Joseph Kaplan, and Oscar Schachter. The incredible illustrations are by Chesley Bonestell ("the Dean of Space Art") along with two other great magazine illustrators of the fifties, Fred Freeman and Rolf Klep. Rockets, Space Stations, Moon Landings, and Mars Colonies. What more could we ask? Inspired partly by Bonestell's and Ley's earlier book "The Conquest of Space" (Viking, 1949) articles in these magazines were integrated into two follow-up volumes from the same publisher, "Across the Space Frontier" (1952) and "Conquest of the Moon" (1953). Surprisingly, the fourth and final volume, "The Exploration of Mars" (1956), was produced with all new content exclusively by Von Braun, Ley, and Bonestell, leaving Collier's and its people out of it. This was also around the time the trio started working with Walt Disney, and since Collier's was the primary sponsor of Disneyland's moon launch attraction, I'm assuming they were cool with the Mars book. In any case, the articles and art in the April 30, 1954 issue are different from what is in the book (and the pages are larger too!)* a few minor flaws are noted in condition description, but this could easily be the best set of these you will ever see. March 22, 1952: "Man will Conquer Space Soon. October 18, 1952: "Man on the Moon." October 25, 1952: "More about Man on the Moon." February 28, 1953: "World's First Space Suit." March 7, 1953: "More about Man's Survival in Space." March 14, 1953: "How Man will Meet Emergency in Space Travel." June 27, 1953: "The Baby Space Station: First Step in the Conquest of Space." April 30, 1954: "Is There Life on Mars?"
