Description: Ames Model 1860 U.S. Light Cavalry Sword, dated 1861, this very nice specimen bears the early manufacture stamp on the left or reverse ricasso reading "made by Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass. The obverse or right ricasso is stamped U.S. with the initials GGS (U.S. inspector G.G. Saunders) forming the 2nd line, and thirdly, the date stamp of 1861. The blade is in superb condition with some age darkening, the condition of the grip, its wrap, and wire is excellent. The guard is unbroken and the leather washer is intact and in place. The scabbard's rings are intact, the drag does not show excessive wear, and the scabbards throat is intact. There is surface pitting on the scabbard. This sword came to us from an older home in coastal South Carolina and was on display in the South Carolina Civil War Museum for a number of years. No returns.
