Description: This is my favorite ball gown. I used to wear it only to the most formal reenactment balls, maybe worn a dozen times at most. My size changed, and it was put away. I've been losing weight so I pulled it out in hopes of wearing it to Remembrance Day ball in Gettysburg and discovered there is no way I will ever fit this dress again. It seems like only yesterday, but reality is that it has not been worn to a ball in 20 years or maybe more. Condition is excellent though there are some spots where the beads have broken or are missing but not so many it spoils the effect. It is a deeper red than the photos show because it shines in the flash. Think burgundy. Made by me with a Butterick pattern as the starting point, I do not remember the fabric blend. I do not think it is pure silk, but it has the look of silk in deep burgundy with a machined swirl pattern in it. Interior is lined in the same color without the swirls. puff sleeves with loose elastic at the ends to make a ruffle. V back, front neck is squared off by rows of beads. a pleated bertha is attached at the shoulders. Boned bodice. I did not bother to overcast the arm hole seams because I was making it for myself and I didn't care. One piece dress with solid fabric waistband, pleated waist skirt, beaded scalloped trim on lower edge of skirt. Back fastens with hook and eyes. This leaves only limited room for adjustability. If you have talent as a seamstress you could convert it to a lace up back without too much work. I thought of doing this for myself but in my case it still fits on the top 3 hooks but I get too big as it goes down, so laces would make it fit but it would look awkward. I am wearing it in the pictures and I am about 5 '6.5" with no shoes on. I actively dance so I like my dresses to clear the floor so I will not step on them and trip. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to dance in a dress that is too long. The main photo is with a 120" bottom diameter hoop. The second shot shows it without the hoop. It could definitely be worn this way as a prom dress or gown or theatrical MEASUREMENTS: Bust 36" This and all dresses of this period are designed to be worn over a corset. if you dont have one a long line bra with a good foundatiton helps, but if you want to be true to the civil war look a corset is the way to go, and no they do not hurt or obstruct your breathing.Waist 30" to a snug 31" measured at the natural waist.under arm to lower edge off waistbandback from bottom of V to lower edge of waistband.9" closes withg 7 hooks and eyesSkirt is fully lined in the smooth red fabric with a layer of netting between the layers to give it some body,Skirt length is about 41" from waist to hem but that comes up a bit depending on the size of the hoop you wear under it.
