This bottle is a RARE EXAMPLE on account of the fact that it has FULL LABELS and is FULLY EMBOSSED including the date, 1894. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating back to the 1800's. Bottle is embossed: "VAPO - CRESOLENE CO. / PAT'D U.S. JULY 17 94 ENG. JULY 23 94". The latter would be the patent dates, July 17 and July 23, 1894. Condition: Bottle is in good clean condition with just traces of content stain and age wear. It has NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. PLEASE see pictures for better idea of bottle and LABEL'S appearance and condition. This bottle contained a thick black creosote liquid contents that would be used in a Cresolene vaporizer. The vaporizer consisted of a small glass oil lamps that sat inside a small brass frame-work with a small tray mounted above the lamp. The liquid Cresolene was poured into the little tray where the lamp heated it, and 'vaporized' it into the immediate vicinity, much like a steam vaporizer works in modern days. Then the vapors were ingested by the patient and the patient was cured of almost every affliction known to mankind, according to the propaganda that came with the product. You don't often find these antique poison bottles this complete, it has a total of four (4) original paper labels. Most always the labels are worn off from the elements of time. This bottle is listed as # KS-14 in the Poison Bottle book. Antique poison bottles are quite collectible as they were most always made in odd shapes or forms, unusual colors, and had fancy or extraordinary embossing patterns on them (as is the case here with the embossed 'warning protrusions' on two sides of this bottle). Though originally these were all things to let a user know, by sight and feel, that the bottle contained a sensitive substance, these things today are what makes poison bottles such a collectible category of antique bottle collecting. I don't think that the FDA of today would let a product containing creosote be used as an inhaler to cure, it probably caused cancer. These bottles came in three (3) sizes, this is the small size.
