Description: Primitive antique chasing or repousse hammer head with the bearing notation crudely welding onto the hammer's flat side. Aside from the welded stamp, carved on the hammer's side is more surveying notations. It is unclear if the notation is complete or if some characters have been lost with age as faint characters are somewhat visible. It is also possible that the hammer was reused or repurposed and the two different notations are unrelated to one another. This item was used by either the USFS or USGS for surveying and boundary marking in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. It is also possible the hammer was used to mark felled trees in a given location. Covered in a thick layer of rust with it's unique handle, characteristic of chasing hammers, long gone, this relic was discovered in a heap of various metal items at a small scrap yard in Western Oregon. Destined to be sent overseas to be melted down, we are thrilled to have reclaimed this item and offer it to collectors and enthusiasts of surveying, forestry, primitive tools, and/or those who just revel in the history of the PNW. This item is being offered "as is," absent its handle, but heavy in history (over 4lbs). After discussion with the yard's owner about the potential historic and collectible importance of the item, he informed me that the load in which included the hammer was brought in by a professional scrapper often charged with the clearing of metal items from farms and large estates. The yard's owner agreed to consign the item. There are a few marking hammers currently listed on eBay, some were manufactured with certain surveying notations or mill branding names or characters. Very few of which are truly antique let alone feature the primitive welded and craved boundary notations on a hammer deliberately repurposed for this specific task. These alterations not only help validate the vintage of the hammer, but tell the story of the mighty Pacific Northwest itself when the region was wild and unsullied by the consequences of modernity.
