We do not know how to distinguish whether this came from the 1876 or 1888 edition though we are confident it is from one of them. The imagery can be broken up into quadrants, with the “noble” upper left and lower right images being sourced from the 14th century Italian manuscript “Roman de Saint-Graal” and those in the upper right and lower left drawn from 12th and 13th century paintings from the castle of Saint-Floret in Auvergne. It is a beautifully balanced composition contrasting the quiet endeavors of the noblility with the active melee the mounted knights are engaged in. “Le Costume Historique” was published by Firmin-Didot et Cie in Paris where Racinet was both artist and art director. Racinet was initially trained as a lithographer and draftsman by his father, Charles-Auguste Racinet, and received further training at the École de dessin in Paris. He eventually settled at Firmin-Didot et Cie in 1869 where he was employed until 1888 and would make his lasting impact. The print is marked as follows: EUROPE MOYEN-AGE. EUROPA MIDDLEAGES. EUROPA MITTELALTAR. DURIN LITH. IMP. FIRMIN DIDOT ET CIE PARIS. The visible area measures roughly 7 7/8“ x 6 7/8“. The frame measures roughly 15 1/2“ x 12 1/2“ x 13/16“. It weighs roughly 1 lb 14 oz. The print was not examined out of frame but appears to be in good shape considering its age, seeming only to have some small dark spots and/or imperfections, and perhaps some uniform fading/age toning, though we do not have another in hand to compare it to (see pictures). The frame also appears to be in fair to good shape having a few small chips/nicks and some bumped/chipped corners. This original antique framed Racinet “Europe Middle Ages” chromolithograph from “Le Costume Historique” is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
