Description: This engraving is dated 1647 and is by the famous Dutch painter and engraver Pieter Claesz Soutman. The image is of Johannus Brederode (a well known name in the Netherlands) who was a prominent noble whose line died out. The castle still stands and now belongs to the Dutch government. Pieter Soutman lived in Haarlem, Holland from around 1600 to 1657. He trained with Pieter Paul Rubens in Antwerp and became quite famous as a painter and engraver. His paintings can be seen in Huis ten Bosch, The Hague. This engraving is in good condition with three very small spots on the face of Brederode. The piece has been matted in acid free material and is room ready. Measurements are: engraving 17 1/2” by 13” mount is 20” by 16”
