This is a beautiful antique, c. 1900-1908, Art Nouveau or Jugendstil silver plated pewter figural card, desk or vanity tray having a young child watching a snail. Undulating curving edges articulate a water swirl surrounding them. Made by WMF, Würtembergische Metalwaren Fabrik, Germany. Tray is unmarked but guaranteed to be as stated. 4 small bun feet, tray sits perfectly balanced. It is surprisingly light. Charming testiment to the wonders of childhood. Measures approx. 11" long x 5-3/8" wide. Very good pre-owned antique condition with age appropriate wear. I see a top surface crease line where the top of snail end handle meets the dish edge-not apparent on the bottom at all-so this handle may have had a drop at some point. It isn't visually obvious unless one starts focusing on it. Edges undulate in profile, I believe that is original as designed, if not there are some bends along the edge but they work with the design if they are bends, no evidence of any sharp impact. Has modest surface wear without being distracting. Previous long time owner polished the tray and it has a lovely pewter forward silver coloring, I leave any further polishing to the new owner as desired. No deep scratching. Displays beautifully.
