Jannaeus 103-76 BC Widow's Mite Coin 18Kt Gold Judah Maccabee Ancient Holyland bronze coin of Alexander Jannaeus 103-76 B.C. Widow's Mite coin pendant 18kt yellow gold. Numismatists and archaeologists believe the coin the widow in the story most likely possessed was a small bronze coin known as a “prutah.” It is called a “mite” because of its small size, and it is the word used in the King James translation of the Bible. In the New Testament Gospels of Luke and Mark is one of the most famous passages of The Bible that has come to be known as “the lesson of the widow’s mite”. It is about a poor widow who offered two small copper coins in a church’s offering, while people with more money around her made much larger offerings. When Jesus observed this happening at the Temple in Jerusalem, he said (according to Luke): “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” The bronze coins of this story were not described in any detail, leaving it to scholars and numismatists to try to discern what specific coins were offered by the widow. They are widely believed to be what are known as lepton (which means “small” or “thin’) coins minted by Alexander Jannaeus, King of Judea from 103 to 76 BCE and the great grand-nephew of King Judah Maccabee. Two lepta were worth a quadrans, the smallest Roman coin, and a lepton was the least valuable coin that circulated in Judea. Certified by Aber & Levine Ltd. of Kedumim, Israel. "WIDOW'S MITE COIN, ANCIENT HOLYLAND BRONZE COIN OF ALEXANDER JANNAEUS (103-76 BC) GRAND-NEPHEW OF JUDAH THE MACCABEE." "OBVERSE: Wreath tied to bottom, with leaves in groups of three. Legend, in five lines: (written in Hebrew it translates to) 'Yehonatan the High Priest and the Hever of the Jews'." "REVERSE: Double cornucopia, with pendant ribbons; within, pomegranate. Border of dots." "This coin was minted in Jerusalem and is considered to be the "WIDOW'S MITE." "Certificate number 9747 Certified this 26 day of August 2000. Signed, David Levine". "Coins Through the Years. The world's first coins were produced about 700 BC in Asia Minor. The Greeks were the first to circulate coins widely as a medium of exchange beginning approximately 150 years later. Coins of this early period are extremely rare. For the next 2000 years bronze, silver and gold coins were struck in mints throughout the ancient world as the main system of currency.Bronze and sometimes silver coins were used for daily commerce in the marketplace, while larger silver and gold coins served as payment of larger debts and savings. The design of the earliest coins followed no set patterns. Animals, flowers and frequently deities were typical motifs. Beginning in the first century AD a pattern developed which appears on most coins throughout the world. The obverse of the coin shows the bust of a present or past emperor with a legend around the outside of the coins and often included the year of the emperor's reign. The reverse side of the coins varies greatly. Most emperors minted several hundred different coins paying tribute to deities, military victories, personifications of values, or cities. The legend on the reverse usually noted the tribute and a mint mark." "Care Instructions. Your ancient coin has lasted hundreds of years and will last hundreds more. It will maintain its numismatic value while you enjoy its decorative beauty. The gold frame may be cleaned with a soft brush and mild detergent." "If you should wish to make any change in the gold setting, remember that the coin cannot withstand the heat of soldering and must be removed by a qualified jeweler before any work is done. We recommend that you not wear your ancient coin during swimming or showering as soaps and shampoo can damage the patina on the coin."
