Numismatists and archaeologists believe the coin the widow in the story most likely possessed was a small bronze coin known as a “prutah.” It is called a “mite” because of its small size, and it is the word used in the King James translation of the Bible. In the New Testament Gospels of Luke and Mark is one of the most famous passages of The Bible that has come to be known as “the lesson of the widow’s mite”.
