Anatomy of a South African Genocide : The Extermination of the Cape San Peopl...

Description: Anatomy of a South African Genocide : The Extermination of the Cape San Peoples, Paperback by Adhikari, Mohamed, ISBN 0821419870, ISBN-13 9780821419878, Brand New, Free shipping in the US In this account of the destruction of the indigenous hunter-gatherer peoples of South Africa's Kalahari Desert during the 18th and 19th centuries, Adhikari (historical studies, University of Cape Town) argues that the annihilation of the Cape San societies was intentionally perpetuated by Dutch and British colonists, and so constitutes genocide. Th begins with a brief review of definitions of genocide from various sources, then reviews the confrontations between San and Dutch settlers, looking at the driving forces behind Dutch colonial expansion in the region and the escalation of conflict to all-out war and an extermination campaign when the British took control of the region in 1795. The author then surveys scholarly opinion on the nature of these killings and counters the scholarly objections to labeling the San extermination as genocide. A brief conclusion reveals the perspective of the remaining San in modern times. The author has written other books on race relations in South Africa.
