Description: An elegant antique mirror with the hallmarks of Thomas Chippendale. In the 1700s due to the west being allowed increased but sill restricted access to the far east, and the far east opening up to trade with the west, the fascination with all things oriental was at a high, and chinoiserie furniture was the fashion. This mirror has the faux bamboo style of the period. Thomas Chippendale started to produce furniture around 1750, at the time of this fashion and is known for faux bamboo designs. Another of the tell tale signs of Chippendale furniture is yoke shaped backs. This dressing table mirror also has that feature. Furthermore, Thomas Chippendale worked in mahogany, which this piece is. The wood is wonderfully heavily patinated. Dark areas from being handled and the natural oils of hands all over, with the warm red mahogany glowing through in places from underneath. With this amount of patination it can easily date it to the Georgian era of the 1700s. The cherry on top is that this dressing table mirror has its original plate. Again patinated and weathered enough to take it back to the 1700s. So it is 100% complete. These old degraded mirror plates are a valuable commodity in themselves. People buy mirrors with wooden stands they don't want, just for the glass. Degraded mirror plates are becoming rarer and rarer. Gold dust. Condition is excellent, commensurate with age. Mahogany is now an endangered wood, rare and highly sought after. A rare piece. The only one on Ebay you will notice. An elegant thing, from a more elegant time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- International buyers are responsible for import fees and any additional costs.
